Limbé, or in Haitian Creole Lenbe, is a city and commune situated in the Nord Department of Haiti, along the northern shoreline of the country, with views extending across the Atlantic Ocean.
Limbe is well-regarded in the Nord Department for its accessible healthcare services. The hospital Bon-Samaritain was under the dedicated leadership of Dr. Williams Hodges for a remarkable four decades until his passing in 1996. Additionally, Dr. Hodges pursued archaeology as a passionate pursuit, and he established the compact Museum of Guahaba in Limbé. This museum is dedicated to showcasing Amerindian native artifacts from the Arawak/Taíno tribes.
Limbé was home to Dutty Boukman, a Vodou priest. Boukman played a significant role in Haitian history by organizing a well-known religious assembly of African slaves in Bois-Caiman in August 1791. This gathering aimed to prepare the enslaved population mentally for the commencement of the uprising.
A few years later, in 1803, the enslaved army also convened in Limbé, specifically in a square called "Nan Canno". This assembly served as a preparation point before the final assault on Cap-Haïtien, situated 26 kilometers further to the northeast. This event was a precursor to the famous Battle of Vertières, where the revolutionary enslaved army triumphed over the last French stronghold during the Haitian Revolution.
