Fort-Liberté, also known as Fòlibète, is a historic coastal town in Haiti’s Nord-Est department and one of the country’s oldest cities. First founded by the Spanish in 1578 under the Taíno name Bayaha, the site was later rebuilt by the French in 1732 as the fortified town of Fort-Dauphin, guarding a deep natural bay on the northern coast.

Over the centuries, Fort-Liberté has stood at the center of Caribbean struggles for power. The town changed hands between Spain, France, and Britain, and during the Haitian Revolution its bay and stone forts became strategic strongholds. On November 29, 1803, Haiti’s first declaration of independence was proclaimed here months before the new nation officially took the name Haiti.

Today, Fort-Liberté is known for its calm waterfront, colonial fountain, and the ruins of the old forts watching over the turquoise bay. It remains a quiet but powerful symbol of resistance, freedom, and the long journey that shaped modern Haiti.
