Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, is located along the shores of the Gulf of Gonâve. Within the city, you'll discover the Musée du Panthéon National Haïtien, a tribute to the nation's history and its founding figures. The Iron Market, a substantial covered market dating back to 1891, hosts various vendors selling fresh produce and handcrafted goods. Close by stands the grand Notre Dame de l'Assomption Cathedral.
In 1770, Port-au-Prince took over as the capital of the Saint-Domingue colony, replacing Cap-Français (now known as Cap-Haïtien).
In November 1791, it suffered destruction during a conflict between black revolutionaries attacking the city and white plantation owners defending it.
On June 4, 1794, British forces seized control of Port-au-Prince after the Battle of Port-Républicain.
In 1804, it became the capital of the newly independent nation of Haiti. Following the assassination of Jean-Jacques Dessalines in 1806, Port-au-Prince served as the capital of the southern region, which was predominantly mulatto (Cap-Haïtien was the capital of the northern, predominantly black region). The city was reinstated as the capital of the entire nation when Haiti was reunified in 1820.
